TECHNOLOGY
Prof Wang’s novel procedure, combines nano-science and fundamental physics to greatly increase the efficiency at which an LED converts energy into light.
The technology is a new concept in white HBLED design. It brings together low cost mass manufactured blue HBLED structures and nano-science to achieve a white HBLED with superior performance compared to current state-of-the-art.
The brightness (efficacy) of current HBLEDs range from 60 to 120 lumens per watt (lm/W). Adoption of Prof Wang’s procedure could see mass manufactured HBLEDs with efficacies of around 200 to 260 lm/W. By analyzing the historic increase in efficacy since 2000 and its subsequent affect on the growth of the LED markets, this technology may bring forward forecasted trends by about four years or more

Prof Wang’s procedure enables a hitherto underutilised process for the creation of blue light at the very heart of an HBLED By dramatically increasing the efficiency of light conversion it can greatly reduce the need for cooling and enable new market sectors such as domestic and civil lighting offering a cheap realistic alternative to incandescent bulbs (which are being phased out globally).
Successful demonstrations of the technology have so far resulted in increases of light output from between 80% to 120% compared to unprocessed devices, which means that either much brighter lamps can be manufactured or that the power consumption of state-of-the-art lamps can be further reduced.
